How An American Singer Got Invited to Record the Thai Royal Anthem

(ENGLISH VERSION BELOW)

SF Cinema

SF Cinema

How An American Singer Got Invited to Record the Thai Royal Anthem

Several months ago I received a very unexpected call from a representative of SF Cinema’s production team. They wanted to know if I would be interested in recording a new version of the Royal Anthem to be used in all their movie theaters. They didn’t have to ask me twice. Of course I was interested.

On stage at the press conference announcing the project
My first question for them, however, was this: Why me? Why would you want a foreigner, an American, to sing the Royal Anthem when it is practically the second national anthem of the country?

Khun Bodin, producer of the project, explained in the press conference that he had one of my CDs, and that one track in particular captured the emotion of what he wanted for this project (the track is called Love is Flowing Like a River, listen here). He also explained that he remembered my voice, and specifically my Thai singing, from a concert several years ago I gave as one of the performers who were honored to take the stage as part of the King’s birthday extravaganza held in front of the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall.
Rehearsing with the orchestra in front of the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall
The song that I performed that night was “King of Kings” which was near the end of the concert, and my parts went perfectly smoothly. As I left the stage I was surprised by one of the production team who told me not to go too far, that we had to go on stage one more time to sing the Royal Anthem.

Huh? What? This was news to me. I panicked - of course I had heard the anthem many, many times, but I had never performed it and I didn’t know the words. Luckily for me I wasn’t singing alone. As I took the stage I felt a wave of awe rush over me as over 300,000 voices joined the other soloists and the 100+ piece orchestra, all singing the Royal Anthem together. It didn’t matter that I didn’t know all the words. Everyone else did. I was participating in a truly unique experience, one that gave me chills and is one of the highlights of my performing career.

Fast forward over two years later to that phone call from Dr. Head and SF Cinema. Would I be interested in recording a new version of the Royal Anthem? Yes. Yes, I was most definitely interested.
The day of the press conference...
Taking on this project would put me in the unique position of being a foreigner acting as the voice of the Thai people. I knew that this was a truly special opportunity for me to give something back to the nation that had given me so much - a beautiful family, a blessed life. I felt the pressure to make sure that I did as good a job as I possibly could, and I knew that I could rise to the occasion and make this a very special recording, one unlike any other.

With my a cappella group back in the day...
I got straight to work. My first challenge was to make sure that I understood the lyrics. I consulted my personal Thai coach, Bundit Ungrangsee, to ensure that I had the meaning of the words right. Once I understood the song I could get to work writing a new arrangement that would capture the emotion I wanted, underscoring the power of the lyrics. (I have always enjoyed writing arrangements. Back when I sang with an a cappella group, the challenge of finding new and more interesting harmonies for my group to sing was a great thrill.)  I wrote a four-part vocal arrangement and headed into the recording studio where I recorded all four parts.
Writing the new arrangement...
I worked hard in the studio to make sure that I got every little thing right. Every word, every syllable needed to be perfectly clear. Every note needed to be exactly in tune. The production team and I were dedicated to making sure that this project came out as beautifully as possible.
in the studio...

I am very proud of the work I did on this recording. I am proud of the arrangement I wrote. My goal was to make a recording of a familiar song that would stand out. By changing the harmony ever so slightly, I hoped to draw attention to the meaning of the words in a way that perhaps audiences hadn’t heard before. I wanted people to hear this recording and be proud to be Thai, even though a foreigner was doing the singing.

Thailand has been very good to me, and I hope that in this small way I can give something back. I offer my respect and admiration to His Majesty the King, and my love and thanks to the people of Thailand. May this beautiful country continue to grow and prosper.
